Frederick Remembrance Memorial plans May soil collection

May 13, 2023 @ 2:00 pm

Of the 38 racial terror lynchings documented by the Maryland Lynching Memorial Project, three took place in Frederick County:

  • John Biggus (Frederick) 1887
  • James Bowens (Frederick) 1885

On Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 2p, the Frederick Remembrance Memorial (FRM) will honor those victims by holding a remembrance ceremony and soil collection at South End Park Pavilion, 413 Burck Street, in Frederick, MD. (Access to Pavilion from Scotty’s Bus Lane).

(Hagerstown) Herald and Torch Light, April 23, 1979

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Terry Anne Scott, Director of the Institute for Common Power, author of the acclaimed “Lynching and Leisure: Race and the Transformation of Mob Violence in Texas”, and a member of the MLMP board of directors.

Poet Elayne Bond Hyman, author of Catoctin SlaveSpeak, a collection of narrative poems written in the voices of stolen Africans enslaved at Catoctin Furnace, will also be among the guest speakers.

The program is free, but FRM is asking attendees to register in advance, HERE.
