Musical and historical content were very effective in conveying the theme of the course. Emotions were stimulated to “feel” the characters described in written and verbal material presented.

I enjoyed the indirect way Ms. Hyman introduced the topic through music from Abbey Lincoln, Nina Simone and Sweet Honey in the Rock. That was unusual and poignant. And then came the main course, Ms. Hyman’s personal story and then the fictionalized account of some of her ancestors, all aimed at telling the larger story of enslaved, former enslaved and so-called “free” blacks. It was a powerful improvement to my understanding of these.

BEST PART: The reading from part of her forthcoming book was fantastic! Such clear, evocative work pictures! I was drawn in, almost present as a first-person witness. Very powerful writing, a very talented writer.

Minor issues: Room was a bit too warm. The coordination with the person controlling what was presented on the screen wasn’t smooth.

Instructor identified a goal of depicting her ancestors as human beings who had lives, relationships, aspirations, and she surely accomplished that goal.

I appreciated that she wove Nina Simone and Sweet Honey into the presentation.

The instructor was clearly inspired by the search and the discoveries; she is an appealing presenter.

Class or Program Suggestions?

Hearing was a challenge, especially when the presenter spoke in a dramatic whisper, which was often. While amplified sound might not be preferred, awareness of the need to project would be good, especially when looking down to read from notes.

I expected more historic substance, given the period referenced and the fact that we’re in a pivotal region.

Also classes on the climate crisis and solutions, using an approach similar to Robin Kimmerer in Braiding Sweetgrass. My pie in the sky wish would be to invite the author herself to lead a class.
